Ho ho ho, what a busy festive week! We have been getting ready for Santa to come and visit our homes in the next few weeks, our classroom is looking very festive! We have an elf who has been leaving us messages about the North Pole and how Rudolph is feeling…he’s been a bit poorly so we have written lots of get well messages in our cards and made him some reindeer pictures too. We hope you feel better in time for your big journey Rudolph!

Miss Tucker has helped us this week to learn about Lapland and we have made some salt dough decorations for our Christmas trees. We were wondering how the animals in the North and South kept warm in the snow- well done to Harley for being our scientist and covering his hands in ‘insulating blubber’ to test how fat keeps us warm!

A big thank you to Mrs Hutchinson, Miss Gibson and Mrs Smith for looking after us this week while Mrs Leyland teaches from home. We hope you all have a wonderful and safe Christmas. Miss Patterson is very excited to be your teacher in January!

Thank you so much to all our parents who are supporting home learning, all our cards and lovely gifts. I will be back to visit with Baby Leyland as soon as it is safe to :o)

Week beginning 28/2/22

What a busy first week back we have had! We have celebrated pancake day, St David’s day and World book day!

At the start of the week we wrote shopping lists for what we needed to make pancakes and we loved finding out all about how to make the batter. Lots of us enjoyed attending the Pancake Breakfast on Wednesday and had lots of fun.

We also learnt all about Wales and how they celebrate on St David’s day. We enjoyed finding Wales on the map of the UK and spotting where we lived. We learnt about different traditions they have and enjoyed creating our own Welsh flags and Daffodils.

On World Book Day we got dressed up as our favourite characters and enjoyed activities such as a book treasure hunt, poetry through drama, making book marks and even a quiz. We loved telling all of our friends who we had dressed up as.

Week beginning 7th March 2022

This week has been another busy one in reception class and we have been very excited about some little creatures who have come to join us in our room!  On Monday, we began to think about some different animals and mini-beasts that we might start to see again now that the weather is getting warmer. We also talked about the life cycle of butterflies but it was the lifecycle of a frog that got us most excited! We were lucky enough to have some frogspawn in class and we have been fascinated all week watching the changes, already some of the tadpoles have started to wiggle and move!

We have also started a new book called ‘Six Dinner Sid’ all about a cat who has six owners! The children wrote some fantastic adjectives for Sid such as greedy, happy and lucky. Throughout the week, the children also role-played as Sid and were able to answer questions asked by their friends such as, ‘What is your favourite food?’. They then wrote speech bubbles in the role of Sid talking about his favourite things!

We have continued to compare numbers in maths talking about more and less. The children enjoyed beating Miss Patterson in a game of ‘Who has more?’ This game involved the children taking it in turns to role a dice, if their number was bigger than Miss Patterson’s then they won, if it was less Miss Patterson won. This is a really easy and fun game that you might want to play at home too!

5th November 2021

This week in FS2 we have been busy learning about the Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Some children have retold the story using the magnetic pictures. We have also been talking about Guy Fawkes and his gunpowder plot. We mixed our own colours using the powder paints and created beautiful firework paintings over the Houses of Parliament. Mrs Leyland also discussed how to keep us safe and the importance of keeping safe when around fireworks. In Maths we have been looking at the vocabulary ‘more’ and ‘fewer’. We have been playing games to help us with this and building towers in the construction. Who has more who has fewer blocks? In Phonics our sounds have been ‘e’ and ‘u’ and we have read the story ‘In Trouble.’

We hope you have a lovely fireworks weekend!

26th November...its starting to get chilly!

This week we have been looking at the part- whole concept in Maths. We cut up animal pictures and arranged the parts to make a whole picture. We have been very busy practising our Nativity with the rest of Key Stage 1 this week, and we are getting really good at singing the songs now.

Our new class story is called Lost and Found and we have been writing lists of things we might need to take if we were to visit the South Pole, like the little boy in our story. Mrs Leyland has set up the South Pole in our tuff tray so that we can re-enact the story using the small world figures. In phonics this week are sounds are ‘ll’, ‘ss’ and ‘ff’, the friendly letters.

We have loved making wintery pictures at the painting easel and painting Christmas scenes in the workshop. All the children enjoyed visiting the Christmas Fayre, making Christmas crafts and joining in with lots of fun games.

We hope you have a lovely weekend, remember to send in your reading logs and books next week so we can change them :o)

Wb 17th January 2022

What a fantastic start reception have had to their new term.

This week we have been busy identifying the signs of spring that we might begin to see. We have loved exploring different types of seeds, beans and bulbs and have sorted them by size, type and colour. We began to think about what plants might need to grow and planted our own cress seeds which we have loved watching during the week.

We have also enjoyed reading ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The children have imagined what might happen if they had their own magic beanstalk and have played wonderfully together roleplaying the story of Jack in our very own Giant’s castle. We have painted our own beanstalks and some of us have even had a go at creating our own giant beanstalk, practising our cutting and joining techniques, by making paper chains.

It has lovely getting to know the children these past couple of weeks and seeing all their wonderful individual personalities start to shine. Thank you for your support so far.

Miss Patterson.

 Week Beginning 24th January 2022

We have had some very busy horticulturists this week in reception! The children have loved planting their own peas and sunflower seeds and are eagerly awaiting their growth.

We finished our Jack and the Beanstalk story and created some wonderful beanstalk and castle pictures using rollers and sponges.

We have also been learning about the different places people live for example in a flat, bungalow or a house. We talked about the differences between living in the city, in a town and in the countryside. The children were very interested by the fact that some people even live on the water in houseboats.

Week beginning 31/1/22

Reception have had a fantastic week learning all about Chinese New Year! We have loved creating our own dragons to complete dragon dances with. We also enjoyed making Tiger masks as it is the year of the tiger! On Thursday we had a special visitor come in to tell us all about how she celebrates Chinese New Year, have a look on Tapestry to see what we got up to.

We have also been learning about people who help us this week. Our role play area has transformed into a police station and towards the end of the week it changed again into a GP surgery. The children have loved taking on these roles and talking about how they can help others. Well done everyone!

Week beginning 14th March 2022

WOW! Another very busy week in reception class!

On Thursday we celebrated St. Patricks day. We learnt all about St. Patrick and why he is important in Irish history before making our own shamrock posters and having a go at some Irish dancing! Miss Patterson taught us a dance she had learnt at school before we all joined in with some Riverdancing. The children were fantastic, we definitely have some future Michael Flatleys in the class!

On Friday we celebrated Red Nose Day and learnt about how it helps people all around the world. We decorated our own red noses and had a go at telling our funniest jokes. The children worked hard on their jokes and loved seeing all the children laughing along with them.

We have also finished reading Six Dinner Sid. The children thought it was funny when Sid got taken to the vet 6 times in 6 different ways! Next week we will becoming authors/illustrators and having a go at writing our own Six Dinner Sid stories!
