Friday 22nd May 2020

Good morning super star year 1. Well done all of you, you have completed a whole half term learning at home! You should be very proud of yourselves. It has been wonderful seeing what you have all been doing. I think you are all special little stars. Next week you will be able to have a week off. Spend time with your families, sing, dance, play, laugh, smile and be happy!

For option 1 of today's learning maths is about subtracting 2 digit numbers, English is carrying on with the information text you started yesterday. You also have a shadow art challenge to do after that.

For option 2 you will be completing a family maths challenge (go to https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/) . In English you will be following instructions to make a pirate hat and after that you will be thinking about different sounds in music.

Today Miss Hine is reading an exciting story called 'Mr Xargle's book of Earthlets'. It is such an exciting story I hope you enjoy it.

I wonder how all of your sunflowers are growing? Send me some pictures if you can- I'd love to see them.

Have a wonderful day and a fabulous week off with your families.
Take care of each other and always be kind.
Speak to you soon
Miss Arden

Thursday 21st May 2020

Good morning wonderful year 1. Did you enjoy the sunshine yesterday? I hope you had lots of fun and stayed safe in the sun. We bought Ollie a paddling pool and he loved splashing around in it, he also loved splashing me!! Luckily it was so lovely and hot the water helped to cool me down too. It looks like it's going to be hot again today so have fun, stay safe and drink plenty of water.

For option 1 of your learning today maths is about adding 2 digit numbers to 1 digit, English is beginning to write an information text and for history you will find out about the amazing pilot Amelia Earhart.

For option 2 in maths you will be learning about weight and mass and in English you will be writing out a letter in your neatest handwriting. Then for computing you can find out all about how video games work.

Today is the perfect fay to do some crafts in the garden, why not try to make one of Mrs Jones' dream catchers? Or you could make a decoration to hang outside in a tree.

Whatever you choose to do today don't forget to read!! Miss Hine is reading Alfie's Feet today, I remember my mum reading this to me when I was your age. A great book!! Enjoy :-)

Have a wonderful day,
Keep smiling and always be kind
Miss Arden
Wednesday 20th May 2020

Good morning amazing year 1. I hope you had a lovely day yesterday even though the weather was a bit miserable. Today is going to be much sunnier. So if you can, go and enjoy yourselves outdoors- remember to keep safe in the sun though. While you're outside could you use things you find in the garden to make me a picture? I'd love to see your creations.

Please make sure you do some learning today as well.
If you're following option 1 then maths today is all about subtracting ones from 2 digit numbers. English is learning how to use the past tense and in science you will be learning about hibernation.

If you're following option 2 then maths is all about measuring length and in English you will be learning a song and thinking about what you would put in a treasure chest. For science you will be learning about basic forces.

Miss Hine's story today is Hansel and Gretel- one of my favourite stories. Do you remember when we designed our own gingerbread houses at the beginning of the year? Maybe you could draw a picture of the witch's house in the forest today.

Have a wonderful day and keep smiling.
Always be kind,
Miss Arden
Tuesday 19th May 2020

Good morning wonderful year 1 children. I hope you had a wonderful day yesterday even though the weather was a bit miserable. Hopefully today will be a bit brighter. Have a look on Purple Mash for the weather task- can you be a weather reporter today and describe the weather using lots of adjectives (chilly, grey, windy, wet)?

Lots of you created fabulous pirate pictures and treasure maps on Purple Mash yesterday. Today why don't you hide something in your house and make a treasure map for your adults or brothers and sisters to try and find it.

If you're following option 1 of the suggested timetable today in maths you will be adding 2 digit numbers to ones, in English you will be reading and remembering the facts from an information text and you'll be learning to say how you feel in Spanish!

If you're following option 2 you will be measuring length in maths, answering questions about the story 'Sayeeda, the pirate princess' in English and learning about the continent Oceania (Australasia) in Geography.

Make sure you also practise your phonics and read to your adult, a sibling or even one of your teddies.

If you feel like being creative today take a look at Mrs Jones' dream catcher art challenge. She would love to see your creations.

Miss Hine is reading your snack time story today. The book she has chosen is called 'A Whales' song'. It's biscuit Tuesday so grab some milk and a biscuit, grab your favourite teddy, get comfy and enjoy the story.

Have a wonderful day, I know it's difficult being stuck at home but you're doing an amazing job.
Look after you families today and always be kind,
Speak tomorrow
Miss Arden
Monday 18th May 2020

Good morning fabulous year 1, I hope you have had a super weekend. This weekend Ollie and I have been building race tracks for his cars and playing in the garden. It's been a bit chilly though. Let's hope the sunshine comes back this week. We're nearly at the end of the half term! Just one more week of learning then you can have a well deserved week off.

Did you all receive post from school this weekend? If not keep your eyes peeled for a delivery today :-)

Parents- This week I have given you 2 different home learning options. Please choose from the suggestions on the timetable attached- try to follow subjects through though rather than choosing from a different option each day- you could however choose to do the maths from one option and the English from another for the week. I would value your feedback this week- which of the options do you prefer? Remember these are suggestions and if you would prefer to do different things then please do.

Option 1: Oak National Academy
This site has learning videos with a qualified teacher for each lesson. The academy has been endorsed by the government and the lessons look really good. This option does rely on internet access and a device for your child to watch the videos on but activities can be done offline.

Option 2: White Rose and Talk for Writing
If you have been using the White Rose resources for maths and would like to continue then please do. I have attached the latest Talk for Writing booklet. This can be printed off and used or just used from your device. For foundation subjects follow BBC bitesize activities.

If you prefer you can follow the BBC Bitesize weekly schedule.

I will also continue to put optional activities and games on Purple Mash.
Remember please don't try to do all of this- it is impossible! Choose what works for you and your child. Make sure you read each day.

Mrs Jones has set you a challenge to make your own dream catcher, follow the instructions below. Miss Hine has also been busy reading you some of her favourite stories, I hope you enjoy them.

Have a fantastic day year 1,
Keep smiling and always be kind,
Miss Arden
Friday 15th May 2020

Good morning amazing year 1 and well done for completing another week learning at home. I am busy at home writing your reports and it has been lovely to be thinking about you and all that you have achieved so far this year.

Keep going with the work you have started this week. There is no activity for White Rose maths today but there is a challenge on BBC bitesize so head over there and have a look. For English today I would love you to write your own story about a magical pixie based on the story of Pippety Skycap. Could you also draw your pixie? Where might they live? Make sure you read today and do some phonics work.

Why not try playing the matching games on Purple Mash today. Go to the year 1 display board to find each other's games.

If you feel like being energetic today go to gonoodle.com and choose a dance to learn.

Don't forget to listen to Miss Hine reading the snack time story. If you've not listened this week you can catch up by clicking the links on the page below.

I hope that you have a lovely relaxing weekend and have fun spending time with your wonderful families.
Take care and always be kind,
Miss Arden
Thursday 14th May 2020

Good morning super year 1. I hope you're all having a lovely week and are being good as gold. Well done for keeping safe. I'm really enjoying all of the games you are making on Purple Mash, they're so fun to play. I've put them on the year 1 display board today so you can have a go at playing each others. Your car and 3D shape designs are also really cool. Keep up the amazing work.

Keep going with the learning you have been doing. If you're using White Rose the worksheet for today is below. Today you will be learning how to compare number sentences. Today's English task is to write you own poem based on the poem 'If I had Wings'- I wonder what you would do if you did have wings? I would fly all the way to London to see my sister then over to France to see my dad!

Don't forget to look at the presentation about Ole Kirk Christiansen the inventor of Lego and watch the video about how it is made. Then see if you can make a Lego model of your house or of our classroom.

I've attached another document below called YPTE plants. It's got lots of really cool activities you can do at home all about our topic of plants. Have a go!

Parents if you haven't already please complete the 'Return to School' survey on our website and let us know how you feel.

Have a wonderful day year 1.
Keep smiling and always be kind,
Miss Arden

Good morning marvellous year 1! Wow... what a fantastic video message you all made! Mrs Evans sent it to me last night and it made me so happy to see all of your fabulous smiling faces. I know it's only been 7 weeks but you've all grown! Thank you for your wonderful messages and drawings, you have put a big smile on my face and made my heart happy. I sent it to Mrs Jones aswell and she was thrilled to see all of you. We both miss you very much and look forward to seeing you soon hopefully.

Today carry on with the timetable of activities below and the activities I've set for you on Purple Mash. I've attached today's White Rose maths worksheet below if you are following it. Then listen to Miss Hine reading you the snack time story- today is the last instalment of George's Marvellous Medicine- I wonder how it is going to end!

Good morning fabulous year 1. I hope you've had a wonderful bank holiday weekend and enjoyed the VE celebrations on Friday. I have had a lovely weekend in the garden and have been busy planing herbs: coriander, parsley and basil. I've also planted some radishes!! I'll take some pictures today and let you know how they are growing. My little Ollie loved watching and wanted to get involved so ate a handful of compost and coriander seeds!! Silly sausage. Definitely don't do this at home!!

I'm ready for a great new week of learning at home and have attached this week's suggested timetable below. I've also attached the BBC bitesize home learning timetable if you would prefer to follow this. Some tasks have been set on Purple Mash and I'll add more throughout the week.

White Rose maths worksheets are no longer available on their home learning website however we have purchased them as a school so I will attach the worksheets to this page each day.

The science task this week is to find out all about the inventor of Lego. When you've done the activity I'd love you to make a model of your house or our classroom using Lego you have at home then send me the pictures. If you don't have any Lego don't worry, you can make a model using anything you do have at home.

Don't forget to read this week and listen to Miss Hine's snack time story.

Do what you can and keep smiling. Be kind to your parents this week too. You're all doing amazingly staying at home and staying safe. Hopefully we'll be able to see you soon.

Stay safe and keep smiling,
Miss Arden

Good morning magnificent year 1. I hope  you are having a good week and are enjoying the sunshine. Keep the fabulous work coming in, it is really nice to see how hard you're all working while you're staying safe at home. I've loved watching the animations you have been creating and am amazed at all of your coding skills on Purple Mash.

I am in school this week with the children whose parents are key workers. We have been doing lots of fun things but we are really missing you all. I wish I could see all of your smiling faces, but for now staying home and staying safe is the most important thing for you all to do. You're all amazing and are doing a great job.

Today for your maths on White Rose look at adding together and finding a part, for English practise your handwriting then carry on with the Pippety Skycap writing booklet. Do 20 minutes of phonics activities and make sure you read!

If you haven't already have a look at the parts of a plant lesson and make your own model of a flower. Violet sent me her picture today, scroll down to have a look. Can you see how the roots are hidden under the soil? Great work Violet.

Thank you to Jack and his mum for bringing lots of lovely cakes and biscuits to the staff in school, we thought they were delicious and were amazed at your rainbow sponge!! You could definitely add that to your acts of kindness calendar.

What could you all do to be kind today? Even if it is just smiling at someone on your walk today, a little act of kindness can brighten up someones day.

Have a wonderful Wednesday,
Keep smiling and I'll speak to you tomorrow,
Miss Arden
Surprise visitor

I had a surprise visitor to my garden this morning- a parakeet. A parakeet is a bird a bit like a parrot, they don't usually live in the wild in our country so I was quite surprised and thought it must be someones lost pet. However my neighbour told me that there is a family of parakeets nesting in the park behind my house! I hope it visits again, although it was very noisy. Have a look at the pictures below and see if you can spot it hiding in the tree.
Tuesday 5th May 2020

Good morning fabulous year 1. I hope you had a fantastic day yesterday, wasn't the weather beautiful again? It's been lovely to be outside again after the miserable weather for the past few days. I hope you're all ok and being kind.

Well done to all of you who completed work on Purple Mash yesterday, I've put it onto our class display board. Go and have a look at what your friends have been up to.

Today carry on with the tasks I set you yesterday.
  • Maths is all about fact families linking addition and subtraction
  • In English read the story of Pippety Skycap again and answer the questions on p.8. Then think about the words on pages 9 and 10. Can you make some actions for them?
  • Phonics- aim to complete 20 minutes of activities
  • Reading- aim to read for 20-30 minutes today- this can be on Bug Club, reading your books or it can just be reading this message!
Have a look at the timetable for suggestions for science, history, music and computing.
Don't forget to have a go at Mrs Jones' Hungry Monster Game and make sure you listen to Miss Hine reading George's Marvellous Medicine.

Oliver's Exciting New Arrivals

Oliver and his family have become the proud owners of 5 little Chickens! They are 15 weeks old and are settling in to their new coop/run. They should start laying eggs in a few weeks.

Oliver's family have been learning all about hens and how to care for them, to keep them happy and healthy. Their names are; Lucy, Holly, Gladys, Shirley & Stella.

The pictures below are of Oliver with the most friendly hen, Gladys. The family are looking forward to welcoming lots of yummy eggs in the next few weeks. Oliver has been a wonderful carer and has been helping with their cleaning, bedding and keeping them entertained.

I'm really looking forward to hearing more news and I'm sure that all of year 1 will be looking forward to learning all about how to look after chickens when we get back to school.
Monday 4th May 2020

Good morning super year 1. I hope you have had a fantastic weekend. Welcome to another busy week of learning at home.

This week we have lots of different activities for you to try. Have a look at the suggested timetable to find out about science, computing, music and history lessons I've set for you.

As always try to do 30 minutes each of maths, reading and writing, 20 minutes of phonics and spread the other activities across the week.

Maths this week is all about number bonds, fact families, and adding. Have a go using the White Rose website and watching the daily video lesson there. Remember you don't need to print out the worksheets, you could do the activities with objects you have around the house instead (sweets work really well!!).
For writing this week I've set you a Talk for Writing task called  Pippety Skycap- A tale of Mischief. Use the timetable to find out which tasks to do each day. Again you don't need to print this resource, just complete the activities in your pink book.

On Friday this week it is Victory in Europe day (VE day), it marks the end of the Second World War. Find out more about this by reading the lesson presentation with an adult. Have a look in your 2Dos on Purple Mash for some VE day activities. You could also make some Union Jack bunting or try some VE day recipes.

Mrs Jones has set you another task this week- to make a shoe box hungry monster game! Follow the instructions in the photos below. Send pictures of your finished games to me and I will show them to Mrs Jones.

Miss Hine has continued reading George's Marvellous Medicine for your snack time story. George has given Grandma the potion and something terrible has happened! Listen in to find out what happens next.

I love being kind and when I can see others being kind too. This week your challenge is to start a kindness calendar like the one attached below. I wonder what little acts of kindness you could do? Maybe making your adults a drink, doing the washing up, tidying up without being asked or baking some biscuits for your neighbours. I look forward to hearing your about your acts of kindness this week.

Have a wonderful day and I'll speak to you again tomorrow,
Be the kindest you can possibly be today and (as it's Star Wars day) may the fourth be with you ;)
Miss Arden

Friday 1st May 2020

Good morning fabulous year 1 and congratulations on completing another week of learning at home. I’m so impressed with all of the work you have been completing this week. Thank you for all the lovely pictures you have been sending in, it’s great to see what you have all been up to. I think you’re amazing.

Lots of you have been making animations on Purple Mash this week, I've put them all on our class display board. Go to the Earth symbol at the top called 'Sharing' and select our class display board to have a look.

Today head over to BBC bitesize and complete the maths challenge. There is also a reading lesson all about Funny Bones by Allan Ahlberg, one of my favourite books. After that you could try the body percussion music lesson, it sounds like lots of fun! You could also have a look at the other lessons from this week, there’s some history, geography, science and RE.

If you’re looking for something different to do go to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust website. They have uploaded lots of fun activities about animals and a lesson all called Who Lives Where? about different animal habitats.

I’ve been sent some great pictures of Mrs Jones’ art challenge and have added them to the gallery below. Have a go at your own today.

Don’t forget to listen to Miss Hine reading George’s Marvellous Medicine, today the chapter is called Grandma Gets the Medicine. I wonder what will happen to her!

Have a wonderful weekend year 1 and I will speak to you again next week.

Make sure you look after your adults and always be kind,

Miss Arden

Mrs Jones' Art Challenge
This week Mrs Jones is challenging you to create a picture in the style of a famous artist called Pablo Picasso. Picasso was an abstract artist from Spain who liked to paint real things in an unreal way using bright colours. Find out more about him by clicking here

Follow the steps in the photos below to make your own picture. Make sure you take a photo and send it to me so I can show Mrs Jones :)

Thursday 30th April 2020

Good morning fabulous year 1. I hope you are having a great week. Thank you to those who sent me pictures today, it was lovely to see what you have been up to. Well done to all of you for completing the work on Purple Mash this week, I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the animation and coding. Keep up the amazing work you are doing year 1, I’m very proud of you.

A few of you have completed Mrs Jones’ art challenge, she loved the photographs you sent in and thinks you are all very talented! If you haven’t done it already have a go today, if you have done it already why not do a different one today.

Don’t forget to listen to Miss Hine reading George’s Marvellous Medicine. I wonder what will happen in today’s episode?

Today carry on with the maths, writing and phonics work I’ve set you for this week. The weather is a bit wet this week isn’t it? Maybe you could make an indoor reading den today and read with a torch like we did on World Book Day. If you collected leaves on your walk yesterday try making some leaf rubbing by putting them under a piece of paper and colouring over the top of them.

Have a great day.
Always be kind,
Miss Arden

**Parents and carers, I know that the amount of resources for home learning available at the moment is a bit overwhelming, please just choose from them and create a timetable that works for you. I have been sent two more links today. One is the Carol Vorderman maths site themathsfactor.com which is free to sign up to at the moment. It is fully aligned to the National Curriculum and seems like a really fun and engaging way to learn maths- if you have found that the White Rose maths doesn’t work for you maybe you could give this a try. There is currently a wait to get signed up, but it should only take a few days.
Another link to try is some online phonics lessons which follow the Letters and Sounds phonics scheme we use in school and has been commissioned by the Department for Education. The lessons seem a bit long at the moment so just dip in and maybe do 5-10 minutes at a time. Hopefully they will speed them up after this week! Click here to go to their YouTube channel and see the covering letter to parents below.
I also understand that not everyone has access to the internet or enough devices at home. If this is the case and you would like further support or resources please don't hesitate to contact me through the school office. **

Wednesday 29th April 2020

Good morning fabulous Year 1. I hope you had a great day yesterday even though the weather was cold and miserable. I went on a tree hunt in my garden and used the Woodland Trust app to find out what types of tree I have. Have a look at the pictures below.

Lots of you have been making animations on Purple Mash this week. I’d love you to experiment with this program and see what you can do. You can make your animation longer by clicking the + button at the top of the screen to add more slides. You can even use it to take photographs using a tablet or a phone, could you make a Lego man walk across the screen? Click on the ? at the top of the screen to find out how. If you have already done one you can make more by going straight to 2Animate, don’t forget to save your work.

I’ve had a look on Bug Club today and if you were running low on books to read I’ve set you some more.

Keep up with the amazing work today. Have a look at the time table below for ideas. For White Rose maths today it looks at finding a quarter. Have a look on pobble365.com and choose a picture to write about. If you’re looking for something different to do have a look at the picture below all about hibernation. There are some activities you can do there. Keep up with your phonics activities either on phonicsplay.co.uk or by printing out the phonics booklet below. If you don’t have a printer don’t worry, you can always practise using the flash cards I sent home with you at the beginning of the year.

Have a wonderful day, I’m so proud of you all for staying strong and staying safe.

Keep smiling and always be kind,

Miss Arden

Miss Arden's garden

Here's some pictures of the trees in my garden. I found out what type they were by looking at the leaves and the bark then finding them on the Woodland Trust tree app. How many different types can you spot?

Tuesday 28th April 2020

Good morning magical Year 1. I hope you’ve had a great start to the week and are ready for a fabulous day. I have been spending lots of time in my garden which is a bit like a forest! We have 4 different types of tree in our garden including pine trees which are evergreen. The rest are deciduous: ash trees, a willow tree and a plum tree. Have you been spotting the different trees in your garden or on your walks? Let me know what you’ve found.

Some of you have made some amazing animations on Purple Mash. Have a look at the Year 1 display board to see them. Can you make one of your own today?

Did you spot Mrs Jones’ Art Challenge yesterday? It’s based on the famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. Scroll down to have a go.

Today carry on with the suggested timetable or if you would prefer, complete work from your work packs. Some of you have learned all of your spellings, so I have added a list of 200 more words we use a lot in writing for you to have a go at while you're at home.

For the White Rose maths lesson today it looks at finding a quarter- could you divide something into quarters today? For writing look at the amazing pictures on pobble365.com and choose one you would like to write about. Think about Who…? What…? When…? Where…? Why…? and How…? questions you could ask. Try to do 20 minutes of phonics work using the phonics pack or phonicsplay.co.uk and don’t forget to read!!

Have you listened to Miss Hine reading George’s Marvellous Medicine yet? Scroll down and find the Snack time story links.

Have a wonderful day,
Always be kind and keep up the amazing work.

Miss Arden

Good morning fabulous Year 1, I hope you've all had a great weekend. Hasn't it been lovely and sunny? I have been busy in the garden and playing with Oliver and our cat Nyx. We put up our tent and pretended we were on a camping holiday! What have you been doing?

This week we will be learning all about different types of trees in science, halves and quarters in maths, writing about some amazing pictures, learning about the United Kingdom in geography and becoming animators and programmers in computing!! What a busy week we have ahead of us.

Have a look at the resources and suggested timetable below. Remember if you would prefer to choose activities from the paper home learning pack you were given that is fine.
Miss Hine has been busy reading you one of my favourite books, George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl. Click on the link below to listen.

I'm really looking forward to hearing from you this week through Purple Mash and through any emails you send through the school office.

Have a fantastic day,

Good morning marvellous Year 1. Can you believe we're at the end of another week? I hope you are all still smiling and being kind and helpful to your families.

So many of you have been reading on Bug Club this week, well done! Don't forget that the more you read the more coins you can earn to create your own tree house or compete in races. Go to the 'Rewards' section to find out more.

Well done to Spencer who has been planting tomatoes this week, I can't wait to see them grow in the next few weeks. Well done to Jack too who made his own superhero fish, Mrs Jones thought it was fantastic!

Today carry on with all the amazing work you have been doing.
The maths challenge on White Rose is quite tricky today- you could give it a go but you may need help from a parent or an older brother or sister. Or you could play some maths games on Purple Mash or practise finding a half with this game https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
For English try writing a fact file for one of the mini beasts you have found in your garden. In the Sidney Spider pack there is a recipe for delicious spider biscuits- ask an adult if you can make these today.
Have you been doing your phonics time trial on phonicsplay.co.uk? Have a go today and see if you can beat your time. There are also some phonics games you could do on Purple Mash.

Today Miss Hine is reading Mr Greedy, use the link below to listen.

Look after yourselves and your families this weekend, and I'll speak to you again on Monday.
Always be kind,
Miss Arden

Good morning amazing year 1! You are doing such a fabulous job staying at home and keeping safe. Carry on being kind, thoughtful and caring.

Well done to all of you who have been reading on Bug Club this week, I hope you are enjoying the books.

Today carry on with the work you've been doing this week. Maths today is all about finding a half. What could you cut in half today? Maybe an apple, an orange or even a piece of toast.
For English see if you can find any creatures in your garden then try to describe what they look like using lots of adjectives.
On Purple Mash there are some phonics games you could play or if you haven't already you could write the diary of a plant growing.

Have you tried Mrs Jones' fish origami challenge yet? Paige made a beautiful one yesterday by following the instructions in the video below. Well done Paige, Mrs Jones thought it was amazing!

Don't forget to listen to the snack time story read by Miss Hine, today she is reading The Snowy Day.

Have a terrific Thursday and as always be kind today,
Speak to you tomorrow,

Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Good morning wonderful Year 1! I hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine.

Well done for sending me your garden pictures on Purple Mash, they are all so different and really creative. I’ve put them up on the display board so go and have a look at what everyone has been doing.

Today carry on with the activities I’ve set you. Choose from online activities or the paper pack I sent home. Aim for 30 minutes each of reading, maths and writing and 15 minutes of phonics.

Remember to do some exercise today, maybe you could try some dancing using Zumba kids on Go Noodle https://family.gonoodle.com/channels/zumba-kids or some yoga on Cosmic Kids Yoga https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga

Have any of you tried growing you own vegetables from scraps yet? I have started growing some celery using the instructions from Mrs Jones. I’ll send pictures for you to see what happens.

Mrs Jones has set you a challenge today- can you make origami fish? Scroll down to look at the video of Mrs Jones making them at home and have a go. Send me some pictures of your creations and I'll show them to Mrs Jones.

Don’t forget to listen to the snack time story Miss Hine has recorded or you (link in pdf below). Today she is reading Mr Grumpy’s Outing.

Have a wonderful Wednesday and always be kind.
Speak to you tomorrow,
Miss Arden

Good morning Year 1, I hope you had a fabulous day yesterday and were kind to your adults. I think you are all doing an amazing job staying at home and staying safe. You must really be missing your friends at the moment. Remember this won't be forever, we will all see each other again soon.

Today you can carry on with the activities I set for you yesterday (see suggested plan below).
Today's maths looks at making equal groups.
In English read the story of Sidney Spider again- what can you find out about the words 'ancient' and 'prey'.
To practise your phonics go to phonicsplay.co.uk and do a flash card time trial. You could also complete a sheet of your phonics booklet or look on Purple Mash where I've set you some more activities.
Don't forget to read!

Have you tried growing any food from scraps yet? If not take a look at Mrs Jones' challenge to grow celery. Did you know you can also grow tomatoes in egg boxes? Have a look at the picture below to find out how.

Above all today be kind and helpful to your adults who are working really hard to keep you safe.

Friday 3rd April 2020

Good morning Year 1!
Congratulations to you and your families! You have almost completed two whole weeks of working from home. I know it has been a bit strange and I'm sure you are all missing your friends by now but I have to say I'm so so proud of you all and of all the amazing work you have been doing.

As it would now have been the Easter holidays, after today I am not going to set any work for you to do for the next two weeks. Over the holidays I would love you to get away from your screens and enjoy spending time with your lovely families. Eat lots of chocolate, watch films snuggled under blankets, read books (every day), play, dance and relax.

Although I don't expect you to, if you do want to do some work you are more than welcome to login to Bug Club to read or Purple Mash to explore all of the activities or have a look at the challenges below. Mrs Evans will be setting some Easter challenges on Twitter and on the POTs facebook page too.

Easter Challenges:

  • Make a shoe box scene based on one of your favourite books or one of the books we have studied at school (Farmer Duck, The Gingerbread Man, Tracton Man, Aliens love Underpants, Supertato, Beegu, Julia Donaldson books). Don't worry if you don't have many craft materials at home, you can use any materials you have to create characters and settings (egg boxes, magazines, yogurt pots, leaves, twigs, stones etc). Have a look at the pictures below for some ideas.
  • After Easter we will be starting learning about plants and how they grow. Try to grow some plants at home or in your garden. Herbs and beans are great to grow at home. Take some pictures and send them to me so we can have a look after Easter.
For today logon to White Rose and complete today's lesson on making arrays, if you haven't already, complete the Easter and Holi tasks on Purple Mash. Write a few sentences in your pink book about what you have been doing this week. If you've done all of those things have a look at the list of links below to some activities being offered by celebrities!

Have a wonderful day and a wonderful Easter holiday. I will write to you again on Monday 20th April.
Take care of yourselves and your families, adults need looking after too!!

Good morning fabulous year 1. I hope you're having a lovely week and are having fun learning at home.

Well done to those of you who have handed in their Easter and Holi work on Purple Mash, I've added it all to the class display board for you all to see. For those of you who have finished I've put some animals quizzes on there for you to have a go at.

Remember to write a few sentences about what you have been up to in your pink books, can you use your neatest handwriting? Why not scroll down this page and practise your letters using our handwriting video.

Try going onto the White Rose website today and having a go at some of the maths activities. Today is all about grouping objects into equal amounts. What could you use in your house to help you? Can you take a picture and show me what you've done?

Mrs Marsland has been busy baking at home this week and has added a recipe for sourdough bread to the website, if you can have a go at making some of your own. If you don't have all of the ingredients try making something with what you have in.

Keep sending in photos of what you've been up to, I've loved seeing them so far.
Have a wonderful day today, try to do something helpful for your adults in the house. Maybe tidy your room or help to hoover!

Good morning magical Year 1! I hope you're well and having fun with your families at home. I think you are all wonderful and are coping really well with this change. I am missing you all and am thinking about you and wondering what you're up to... I'd love you to email me some pictures today. Mr Bettridge has set up a home school gallery especially for pictures of the great work you are doing!

Yesterday I was playing in the garden with Ollie. As we can't go shopping, we made a water tray out of a plastic box... Ollie was soaked! What could you make using things you find in your house today? Why not try making a model of your bedroom or drawing a map of your home/garden?

Make sure you visit White Rose maths and try the activities there, write a few sentences in your book about what you've been doing, login to purple mash and bug club and read, read, read. Don't forget to look on our new class display board on Purple Mash by clicking on the 'Sharing' tab and choosing Year 1.

I wonder which story Miss Hine will be reading today... Click on today's snack time story and find out.

Something shiny
Something soft
Something green
Something bumpy
Something tiny
Something hard
Something loud
Something stinky
Something round
Something square
Something magnetic
Something purple

Send me a photo if you find them all.

Lastly as you've been learning about capacity in maths, today your challenge is to see how long it takes to fill a sieve with water... Let me know how you get on!

Have a great day,
Always be kind,
Miss Arden

Maybe try again later or complete something from your work pack instead.

September

This month we have been very busy in Year One!
We have been reading The Gingerbread Man and creating lots of fabulous descriptive writing while remembering the story. We also made Gingerbread Men... yummy!

Maths

This month we have been exploring the number 10 in maths. We have used practical equipment to explore sorting objects into groups, counting forwards and backwards to 10, finding different ways to make 10, one to one correspondence and greater than and less than.
November

For World Science Day year 1 conducted an investigation to find out what happens when we mix fluids of different densities.

Fireworks in a jar
We part filled our container with warm water then added a 2cm layer of vegetable oil. We noticed that the oil floated on top of the water. This is because oil is less dense than water. We then placed droplets of different coloured food colouring onto the oil layer. We found out that the bigger the droplet the faster it sinks. We watched as the coloured droplets sank down into the water creating swirls which looked like fireworks.
January

We have been exploring Purple Mash with the iPads. We have learned how to login using our personal usernames and passwords. We talked about the importance of keeping our passwords secret and not sharing information.
On the iPads we explored some maths games and used the small world scenes and art package. Remember you can log in to Purple Mash at home and explore the resources yourself!
In maths we have been exploring addition to 20 using the classroom resources.
February

We did it! Year one braved the cold, crisp weather this morning to complete our sponsored run/walk. Year one teamed up with year five to complete the run/walk together. Year five were really impressed with how athletic year one were and dare I say it how fast year one were in comparison! Well done year one!

Safer Internet Day
Today Year 1 have been learning about how the internet works and how we can stay safe while using the internet. We read a story about Smartie the penguin, he had been given a new tablet for his birthday but he kept having problems: pictures were popping up, his brother left the browser on an inappropriate website and some other players on a game weren't being kind. We talked about what Smartie should do and learned the chant:

Before you tap and click…

You need to stop and think…

 And TELL someone!

To find out more information please visit https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2020 or have a look at the esafety resources on our home page.

Tennis Taster

Today year 1 had a tennis taster with Tennis Wirral. The children listened really well and learned some exciting new skills.
Helping Hands

In RE we have been learning how the Good Samaritan from the Christian bible story helped a man who had been robbed and beaten. We then thought about all the ways we could use our hands to help others.
Healthy Hearts Week
Design, make and evaluate- Fruit Salad

As part of our healthy hearts week Year 1 found out all about how our fruit grows and where in the word it comes from. We used Google Earth to track the journey our fruit had made.
We discussed how fruit should be included as part of a healthy and balanced diet.
We then explored different fruits and discussed what was the same and what was different about them. We used our senses to think about how they looked, smelled, tasted and felt.
We then designed our own fruit salads and made them by chopping, peeling and choosing our favourite fruits.
March

World Book Day

We had lots of fun for this year's World Book Day. The children came dressed as their favourite characters and looked wonderful. We explored the floor books together then made our own reading dens and read by torch light. We then made book marks and drew scenes from our favourite books.

European Day of Languages

For European Day of Languages Year One studied Germany. We found Europe and then Germany on Google Earth, learned the colours of the rainbow in German, learned about the amazing fairytale castles in the mountains, made German flags and read stories by the Brother's Grimm.
Jacob and Benji decided to use the construction equipment to make a model of Neuschwanstein Castle.
October
This month the children have been busy learning about old and new toys. They explored artefacts from the recent past by playing with old toys which were on loan from the Wirral Library Service. Are there any you recognise?
African Drums
The children were really excited to have a session playing the African djembe drums. The children learned what the drums were made from and how being hollow helped make the sounds. They learned how to make different sounds by hitting the drum in different places and how to make loud and quiet sounds. The children enjoyed repeating rhythms and learning an African song.
Reading for information and for pleasure
Children have been exploring the project loan books from Wirral Library Services. They have been reading both fiction and non-fiction books all about our history topic of old toys and our science topic of materials. Some of the books looked at the different materials our toys are made from.
December

After yesterday's general election, we used the voting booths to hold our own vote. We voted on which book we should read at the end of the day 'The Jolly Christmas Postman' or 'Christmas Splat'.
Christmas Splat won with 19 votes to 11.
All dressed and ready for our Christmas performance 'The Inn-spectors'. Looking fabulous year 1!
Animals Assembly

After half term Year 1 will be performing our class assembly all about endangered animals. Over the half term holidays please learn the children's lines with them. We will be performing some songs which use actions in sign language. Please watch the videos below and begin to learn the songs and signs.

Freddie Fit

Year 1 and 2 worked hard during their hour with Freddie Fit as part of our Healthy Hearts week. We learned how exercise affects our bodies and helps us to stay healthy. The children also learned the importance of a healthy diet and good sleep habits.
As you can see from the blurry pictures the children didn't stop moving!!
Animals Assembly

Year 1 performed brilliantly at their assembly all about endangered animals and extinction this week. They learned lots of tricky lines using some very ambitious vocabulary. We went on a journey across the world learning about different endangered animals. We learned lots of  facts about animal diets and behaviours. They performed songs using sign language and talked about how we can use our hands to be kind. Excellent job year 1, you should be very proud of yourselves :)
Break the rules day
To raise money for the school, POTs organised a break the rules day. Children were allowed to break certain rules for 50p. Year 1 rose to the occasion and broke lots of rules today. Rules broken included wearing trainers, bringing a toy in, wearing a hoodie, wearing nail varnish or make up, having temporary tattoos or crazy hair, having juice in their water bottles and wearing odd socks. A great fun day!!
Spring Walk

Year 1 went on a spring walk today to look for evidence of spring in the natural environment. We found buds on trees, new leaves, blossom, pine cones, birds' nests, new shoots and beautiful daffodils. We talked about how the season was changing from winter to spring and how it would change more in a few weeks. Spring has sprung!
