Friday 15th May

Good morning Year 5!
The end of another week. I hope you all slept well - you can have a lie tomorrow!

Today's Maths:
As there is no White Rose maths for today, I have selected 3 games on Purple Mash for you to play, and to practise your mathematical skills! They are;
Factoroids - to practise / revisit your knowledge of factors. You need to break down the factors into equal parts. There is a calculator in the middle of the screen that you control by rotating it using the directional arrows buttons on your keyboard. You can also move the calculator around the screen if you want to. You will probably be much quicker and more accurate then I was!
Fraction Wall - that is self explanatory.
Fractonio's Pizzeria - this involves you putting certain fractions of toppings on pizzas and being rewarded for it/ gaining a score.

- English - Talk4 writing Batch 2 - continue from where you left off yesterday. Remember - the link for this is saved below Monday's message. You can record it in your homework books or just on paper.

Spellings - Practise spellings for week 30 - words ending with 'ion'. If you have time and feel you are ready, you could ask an adult to test you on this weeks spellings.

IDL x2 lessons

Practise times tables on TTRockstars.

- Bug Club - choose a book from your colour band and answer the questions sensibly and accurately.

- Continue with/ complete the activities that Mr. Galpin and I have put on this week e.g. the artwork, French and the Games Design Competition.

- Listen to the next instalment of 'The boy at the Back of the Class' by Onjali Q.Rauf and/ or The BFG (on the year 3 and 4 class page).

- Do some exercise and get some fresh air. How about this for a change? Cosmic Kids Yoga - story-based yoga classes for kids. youtube.com/user/CosmicKids Yoga

Have a great weekend,  stay safe and we will 'speak' on Monday.

Mrs. Holroyd

Bore da Year 5! Sut dych chi? Another fantastic Friday to start a weekend to enjoy and have fun with.

I hope you have had a wonderful week completing the tasks that Mrs. Holroyd and I have been setting for you. Below there is a small challenge for you if you find yourself with some time, pick one of the 60 second lego challenges to complete. Challenge yourself against a family member or just keep improving on your own result.

I hope some of you take up the idea of taking part with the yoga classes, I have been joining my wife doing yoga classes twice a week and its very calming, especially when our dog - Echo - tries to join in.

Fantastic morning this morning Year 5! I hope you had a wonderful weekend making some special memories celebrating the 75th VE Day. I know we had some wonderful VE Day work emailed to both me and Mrs. Holroyd - Aaron's video is wonderful, I hope you enjoy watching it.

I thought this week it would be lovely to see some art work from you. We were going to be looking at still life art this term so I thought you might want to have a go at creating some whilst you were at home.

I thought you could make an artist page to showcase your chosen artists talents. I have attached a word document to explain the activity a little more and given 3 examples of artists you might want to use, but you do not have to stick to the 3 I have suggested.

Have fun with it and choose a still life artist to showcase...

Hope you all have a wonderful day

Good morning Year 5, I hope you are all staying safe and well?

I have been looking through the work that you have finished on Purple Mash, you have been keeping yourselves busy completing some brilliant pieces of work! Well done

I am going to ask you to look at some French today, practising names of fruit (I thought it might remind you of your healthy eating plan from Purple Mash). Click here for your French lesson and it should take you directly to the right place. Just click on 'full tutorial' and you will hear 10 names of fruit with their picture which you can practise saying out loud. Work through the activities and then you will be able to choose a game to play. Try to keep using the names of the fruit over the next few days at home to see how many you can remember!

I hope you have a brilliant weekend, it's meant to be a bit brighter so you can spend some time outside getting some fresh air, I know I will try to.

Monday 30th March 2020

Good morning Year 5! I hope you had a lovely weekend, although it wasn't all that warm. Hopefully you still managed to get outside to do some exercise and get some fresh air.

You will see that there is a link on our class page called 'Year 5 snack time week 1 pdf.' Mr.Bettridge has recorded himself reading a book called Shadowsmith by Ross Mackenzie. The idea is to set yourself up at home as if to is snack time like we have in school and listen to one part of the story each day. So today would be part 1, tomorrow part 2, Wednesday part 3 and so on. You can listen to to at any time that suits you really - you may prefer bedtime. I have recorded myself reading Danny the Champion of the World which is on the Year 3 and 4 class pages. You can listen to both recordings of you want to!

I have chosen 4 more tasks for you on Purple Mash:
Maths - Mixed and improper fractions - Pair
Mixed and improper fractions - sort
Geography - Physical features quiz
                    The water cycle

You could also start learning the spellings for week 25 - words ending in 'ment'.
Don't forget to read each day recording it in your reading records, do 3 IDL lessons and practise your times tables either using Purple Mash or TTRockstars.

Keep exercising every day and getting some fresh air.

Take care, be good and keep smiling.

Speak tomorrow.

Mrs Holroyd

Have a great weekend and I'll speak to you all on Monday.

Stay safe and happy!

Mrs.Holroyd
Friday 27th March 2020

Hello everyone! Friday at last! What an unusual week this has been, but we have had some gorgeous weather. I hope you have all managed to get outside and enjoy the sunshine.

Thank you to all those who have sent back work on the Planets, Stone Circles, Thomas Edison and the 'Dark and dingy words'. A lot of effort was put into all that work - well done. Those of you who haven't done any work yet, it would be a good idea to start up a routine of checking this VLE page and then logging onto Purple Mash to complete some of the tasks.

I've chosen 3 science activities based on Materials as that was our last topic:
Properties of Materials, Reversible changes and irreversible changes.

Don't forget to keep working on IDL lessons, learning your spellings, TTRockstars, Bug Club, the pack of times tables sheets and grammar work we sent home, and lots of reading. And of course, don't forget your fitness! That should keep you very busy and entertained for hours.

Have a good day, help your parents and stay positive and happy.

Mrs. Holroyd
Thursday 26th March 2020

A very good morning to you all! Hope you enjoyed the gorgeous warm sunshine yesterday. Thank you to the children who completed the Multiplication activity on Purple Mash - very proud of you!

I've set 3 more tasks to be completed by next Thursday 2nd April:
2 grammar activities - one called Magic School and the other called Dark and Dingy Words.
A Multiplication game called Funky Platform.

Please remember to practise your weekly spellings and maybe you could ask a parent or sibling to test you - record it in the back of your spelling book.
Another task is to choose a book from Bug Club, read it and answer the questions.
Keep working on IDL lessons and TTRockstars.

I was wondering how you are getting on with your 'positivity / gratitude comments' containers? Hope you've managed to find something appropriate to use and have decorated them in a creative manner. Remember to write a positive comment about the day and something you have been grateful for, and place them in your container.

Have a great day - try to get outside for some fresh air and exercise while the weather is so lovely.

Thinking of you all.
Take care.

Mrs Holroyd

Wednesday 25th March 2020

Good morning Year 5. Hope you are all well and doing exactly what your parents ask of you!!!

I'm hoping you can start to increase the amount of schoolwork you do each day now. Try to do spelling practice (your own lists I think), IDL and TTRockstars (studio, garage etc) every day. You will notice the difference if you do it regularly.

I have put some 2do tasks on Purple Mash starting today:
Multiplication (not set a hand in date)
Scientists research on Thomas Edison (not set a hand in date)
Planet Profile (to be completed by 31.3.20)

Thank you to those children who completed the Stone Circle work - you worked very hard.
Remember to exercise regularly and get some fresh air.

Take care and be good!

Miss. Holroyd

Tuesday 24th March

Good morning Year 5! Hope you all slept well and feel refreshed this morning.

I hope you've started some sort of routine and managed to get out into the sunshine yesterday.
If you didn't do it yesterday, complete 2 or 3 lessons on IDL and maybe do one of the TTRockstars sheets from your pack.

I also thought you might like to set up a positive comments/ gratitude jar. See if you can find a jar or box or some kind of container that you could decorate - draw pictures to stick on it, stickers, any sort of 'creative' things that would make your 'container' look more interesting and unique. It needs to be able to hold small pieces of paper that you will write on each day. At the end of each day write about something that you've really enjoyed and has made you happy (put the date on the paper as well) and on another piece of paper write about something that you are grateful about (again put the date on it). Over the next few weeks you'll collect quite a lot and it will be interesting to read what you have written. If you can't find a container you can draw a box of jar on a piece of paper (like you had in school) and record your thoughts on that.

I can't send a weather forecast as I'm writing this on Monday evening - the internet kept crashing yesterday as half the world was on it!

Have a good day, be helpful and be your usual lovely selves.

Take care

Mrs. Holroyd
Monday 23rd March 2020

Good morning Year 5!

I hope you had a lovely weekend and thoroughly spoilt your mums yesterday on Mothers Day.
I know this is all a bit strange, but you need to stay positive! Try and get into some sort of routine, starting with getting dressed, making your bed, leaving your bedroom tidy etc. These things will really please parents! Put aside some time to do some schoolwork e.g. IDL, practice spellings, TTRockstars, reading, maybe one of the sheets from the pack of work. But also have some fun time, that doesn't involve a screen, and do something creative!!!

Thought I'd give you a daily weather forecast - Mrs. Holroyd  style:
I've looked out of the window this morning and the sun is shining and the sky is blue, so do make sure you get outside and get some fresh air. It's quite chilly out - 2.3 degrees C - so do wrap up warm! It doesn't look like its going to rain, so take advantage of the sunny weather. It might be a good idea to get some exercise outside today, but remember to stay safe.

I will write a message on our VLE page each morning, so try to login for my daily weather forecast and any inspirational ideas I may have had!

Have a good day, be helpful to your parents, smile lots and stay positive.

Speak to you all tomorrow (via this page),

Take care

From Mrs.Holroyd
11 x 11 Challenge

Please find below the South Deeside Primary Schools Federation 11 x 11 book challenge. This challenge is designed specifically for children who have exhausted most of the reading scheme books at school and who really want to get their teeth into a literary challenge. Feel free to use this list, although it is not exhaustive during the school closure.
March - Hand washing

Today we have been looking at the importance of washing our hands using a lovely experiment involving pepper, water and hand wash. We placed some pepper into the water and imagined the pepper to be germs. Next two volunteers placed their fingers in the water and found pepper had stuck to their fingers. After having some hand wash placed on their fingers, the children were amazed to see how the germs (pepper) reacted to the hand wash. The germs (pepper) jumped away from the hand wash. Year five really enjoyed this experiment.
March 04.03.20  - Science

What an animated science lesson we had last week! We looked at the terms reversible and irreversible and carried out a range of experiments to discover which materials belonged to each category.
Burwardsley - Archery

Before the light started to fade, we made the most of the dry weather and tried our hand at archery. Everyone thoroughly enjoy this activity, our instructor John showed us how to throw a spear and then everyone had the opportunity to use a bow and arrow. This was however not everyone's forte and poor Miss Durn made all the children laugh buy continually dropping the arrow.
Burwardsley - Talk

After such a busy afternoon, we all came inside to look at some Iron Age Artefacts. We discovered how resourceful people living in the Iron Age had been, we viewed a comb made from animal bones, witnessed how they created fire and held some extremely heavy swords.
Burwardsley - Clay Pots

In small groups in the afternoon, every child made a clay pot.  The children found rolling the clay difficult, but they enjoyed experimenting and finding different ways to coil the shape of the pot and imprint their own individual carving designs.
Burwardsley - Archaeological Dig

We started the afternoon with an archaeological dig, and we found all manner of interesting artefacts belonging to the Iron Age, the animal bones and jaws were very popular with all of year five . The children really enjoyed this activity, it was very muddy and we even had a random hail storm!

Burwardsley - The Round House

After settling into the dormitories and a quick drink and a biscuit, we had a look around the life sized Iron Age Celtic Round House. The children were fascinated to learn about how the house was constructed and came to understand more about life in the Iron Age. However they were shocked to learn that children in that era did not attend school and instead had to work.  They were equally surprised to find out about the battles between the Celtics and the Romans (as you can see from some of their reactions on the pictures).
March 2020 - Burwardsley
Day one

After a short coach journey, we arrived at Burwardsley excited, nervous and looking forward to all the wonderful adventures ahead.
February 12.02.20

What a fantastic morning we have had in year five today. We feel energised and invigorated after a fun fitness session with Freddy Fit. We really impressed Freddy (aka  Phil) with our knowledge of the human body, we told him the Femur bone was the largest bone in the body and an adult human body contains 206 bones! We were surprised to learn our eyelids are the fastest muscle in our whole body. Year five thoroughly enjoyed the session and said overall they learnt NEVER TO GIVE UP!

January 9/01/2020

Bonjour 2020! Year 5 have had a musical start to the new decade. We have listened to different types of French music and learnt how to say if we liked or disliked a particular type of music. We identified the musical instruments used in Sergei Prokofiev's  piece Peter and the wolf. Then we had great fun miming musical instruments to each other and conveying our guesses in French.
November - 11/11/19 Anti Bullying Week

With it being Anti Bullying Week, a group of children went to Woodchurch High School to discuss bullying and how we can change what happens around us. The change starts with US, not allowing it into our school.
We came up with some fantastic ideas and created posters that put these ideas across. Remember you have 86400 seconds to use in your day, what will you do with yours?
October- African Drumming

We had the opportunity to have a go playing African DJEMBE drums. We learnt all about tempo and pitch. We also had a turn at being the conductor whilst playing different rhythms.

Beautiful morning today!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! I know Mrs Holroyd gave you some recipes to try that related to VE Day, so I thought I would carry on the VE Day theme and give you a choice of several tasks to complete.......

  • Write a short news report in the style of today or 75 years ago
  • Make a short video that tells the story of VE Day, either in the style of 75 years ago or how you would tell it today
  • Design a newspaper front page or article
  • Write or perform a poem, song, drawing or other work of art
  • Share the story of someone in your family or area who was involved in the War
  • Write or perform a short play about VE Day and what it would have been like 75 years ago
Here is a website that will give you lots of ideas and help to complete the challenge that you select, but don't forget to ask members of your family that might be able to help as well. There are lots of choices so don't feel like you have to just select one or the same one as anyone else. Be creative, test your skills and have fun with the idea you choose!

Remember to send your work to the school email so we can see them!

Have fun

Good morning Year 5!
Hope you had a good night's sleep.
A big thank you for all the work that you submitted yesterday - very impressed with it.

One of you asked if you could design your leaflet on a piece of paper, photograph it and then send it to me. I think that is a great idea and you can do that for any of the designing / creating activities if you would prefer. I didn't even think to give you that option! Sorry!

I am not setting any new tasks for today or over the Easter holidays. There still quite a few tasks that haven't been completed yet and some deadlines are for next week anyway.

Remember - you can still do all the online work and work packs that were sent home. There are also a lot of activities listed on the first page of the VLE. Keep an eye out for Mrs. Evans daily challenges that will be posted on the POTS Facebook page and Twitter to do if you wish. There's loads to be getting on with - I'm sure you won't be bored!

Burwardsley - The Conclusion

We had an absolutely amazing time on our residential! There is no better judge than the children themselves and below is a list of how they have described their 'life changing' trip.
The food was super duper, yummylicious.
The Breakfast was fit for an angel.
At the candle factory, we all made spiral unicorn - horn like candles.
I enjoyed a night of freedom from my parents.
I had a fun time relaxing in the girl's dormitory and playing games with my friends.
During the greatest experience of my life, I learnt a range of ever-lasting skills.
Burwardsley - Day 2 - Candles

After a brisk walk around the Cheshire Countryside, the children arrived at the candle factory. We had a fantastic time, making candles, decorating our candle holders and spending our pocket money in the shop.

January 29.01.20

Today we have been looking at the Neolithic era (a period in the Stone Age) and we were lucky enough to receive some real Stone Age artefacts to handle and explore. We appreciated the detail and the time that had been taken to construct the tools made of flint. We were shocked at how sharp the tools were and had to delicately handle them. Stonehenge and the arrangement of the stones baffled us all. How did they do it?
December 4/12/19

Today we looked at bridges; how and why they are used and what aspects of them are important. We discussed pillars (reminding ourselves of our STEM investigation), decks, abutments and parapets but focused on trusses, making our own to see which style would be the strongest. Can you remember what the 3 styles that we looked at were called?
October - 22/10/19

We celebrated Black history month looking specifically at Carol Mae Jemison and Louis Armstrong, identifying their incredible achievements and understanding how they moved society forwards.

We also tied this in with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on gender equality and empowering all women and girls. We looked at Greta Thunberg, Jane Goodall and many other women that have empowered society. Who else can you remember?

October - 10/10/19

World Mental Health Day! Today we spoke about the power of positivism and the difference it can make in our lives everyday.
We started by creating our gratitude journals which we will write something positive or something we are thankful about in our lives.
We also started our Power of Positivity Tin, with everyone putting their name in to hopefully get chosen next week! Will it be you?
September

During our R.E lessons we have been exploring different cultures. We have looked at some artefacts from the Islamic culture including:
  • A Prayer mat
  • Hadj robe
  • An Islamic compass
  • Boorka
  • Mosque incense burner
  • Prayer cap
  • Yashmak

Luckily, the weather was spectacular for our trip and we made the most of it during our last afternoon and took a stroll around the local village. We saw pheasants basking in the sun and a working farm. We visited the local village shop where the children were surprised at the size inside the shop, compared to outside. One child even described it as the Tardis!
