Home learning - July

Friday 17th July

A very good morning on you all Year 5! We have made it safely to the end of the academic year - and what in interesting year it's been. You have been part of history!!

As it’s the last day of term today, I am not setting any work for you. BUT there is quite an interesting activity from the Wizard booklet that you might like to try!! It's on page 25 - Why not try some Wizard Science? You MUST get your parents permission to do these experiments - don't get yourself into trouble just as the holidays are about to begin!!

Normally, on the last day, we would have toy day so you get to play all day, hurrah! However, I thought I would give you a bit of a challenge … In school on toy day, we don’t have games on a screen, so your challenge is to spend the day without any screen time!!!

You could play with your toys, do a jigsaw, do some arts and crafts, go outside and play. You could even make up your own game - I know someone in our class loves creating his own board games! We would also have had a plate of party food at the party sometime this week, so you could try to recreate you own 'last day of term' at home!  Have fun, enjoy yourself and try to avoid using a screen to entertain yourself today.

Have a wonderful last day and an even more wonderful summer holiday.
Thank you for being such a fabulous class of children  - I have missed you dearly these last few weeks. I look forward to seeing you all in September.

Take care and stay safe.
Mrs. Holroyd
Wednesday 15th July

Bonjour la classe! Comment ca va? I hope you all had a good night's sleep and are full of energy for a new day!!

Today's Tasks:
Maths - week 12 lesson 3 - Converting units of time. You will find the worksheets (including the answers) above this message, as well as the video link. You can either print off the worksheets and write on them or record you answers in your homework book or on paper.
English -Talk4writing -We will complete the work for this week from the Talk4writing Batch 4 link above - Wonderful Wizards by Maria Richards. As I've already stated, please don't print out the worksheets as this will be a lot of ink. Instead write down your ideas from the worksheets into your homework book or onto spare paper. The work will build up during the next few weeks so keep what you do each day.
Today's task: Page 21 - Crazy quotes. Follow the Speech Toolkit to help you. Then read the poem 'Wonderful Wizard Potions' ready for tomorrow.
- Book review: I would like you to think about your favourite book you have read this year. It could be a book we’ve read as a class, one you’ve read in guided reading or one you’ve read on your own. Today you’re going to write a book review of this book on Purple Mash, which I have set as a 2Do. You will need to include the book title, who wrote the book, a short summary of what the book is about and your opinion and thoughts on the book. Don’t forget, if you can’t remember the name of the author, you can always ask a parent to google it! I'll be interested to see what you have all chosen!
If you have time:
- Practise week 39 spellings (see list in column 1).
IDL x2 lessons
Practise all times tables x2 to x12 - test on Friday!!

Get plenty of exercise and fresh air. Help out at home by doing some chores - it'll put a smile on your parents' faces (get into their good books before the holidays start!!!)

Have a fantastic day.
Take care and stay safe.

Monday 13th July

Good morning to my fabulous Year 5 class and your amazing families! I hope you had a great weekend enjoying the lovely hot weather.

Well, I can't believe that this is the last week of the school year! It's been a very strange one and we've all had to adapt to all the changes that have been thrown our way. I'm sure you feel you have become more resilient - you should certainly feel very proud of yourselves for continuing to work so hard, at home and at school, since the start of lockdown. I'm quite gutted that I've not been able to see those of you in school the last few weeks as I've been shielding, but I will look forward to seeing you all in September when you are in Year 6!! Thank you for all the work and photos you have sent me, along with the lovely emails - I have really looked forward to receiving correspondence from you.

Well, let's get on with our first day of the week!!

Today's tasks:

- Maths - week 12 Lesson 1 -  Metric units. (I know it says week 10 on the video link but I think that is a typing error!) You will find the worksheets (including the answers) above this message, as well as the video link.

Today's task: Page 18 - 'Write away!' You have got 6 short tasks to do before you write your advert - ask questions, use weasel words, persuasive phrases, use imperative words, write a sentence of 3 amazing things and a catchy slogan. Now write your advert! Don't forget to follow the instructions carefully from the booklet.
- Spellings - If you haven't already done so, ask an adult to test you on week 38 spellings. Begin to learn week 39 spellings - listed above.

IDL x2 lessons

Practise all your times tables x2 to x12! I will set a final times tables test on Friday.

- Brazil Activity - CARNAVAL: Brazil is famous for the carnival (carnaval in Portuguese) that takes place in Rio de Janiero in February. So we are going to combine music, language and topic to look at Carnaval. First, watch this video about Carnaval https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-03w8JF8bg

Then watch this Blue Peter clip and see if you can learn the some of the basic steps along with one of the presenters. Can you put it altogether at the end with the music?

This could be quite a challenge!!!!!!

Get some fresh air and do plenty of exercise.
Have a great day.
Take care and stay safe.
Mrs. Holroyd
Friday 10th July

A very very good morning to you all Year 5! Friday at last! Hooray! I hope you've been enjoying the Brazil activities you've been doing this week. I suggested to Miss Marshall that she organises a trip to Brazil, but unfortunately she declined - shame! But I did try!!
One person sent me the research they had done today about Brazil - thank you very much. Have a read - it's very interesting (below this message).

Today's tasks:

The work will build up during the next few weeks so keep what you do each day.

- P.E. - Now this sounds like fun!! As it’s Brazilian week, I thought you could have a go at some Capoeira. This is a Brazilian martial art that also includes elements of dance. Below is a video with a tutorial that teaches you 4 basic steps as well as giving a background to Capoeira and teaching you some music and song as well!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUUKmUm5SzE

- Complete any work that you haven't managed to complete this week.

Take care and stay safe.

Mrs. Holroyd

Welcome to a fabulous Friday Year 5. I hope all of you are well and have been enjoying your week so far - even though it may have been a bit wet. On the plus side it will only get better at some point! Let the sun shine.

Having looked at some of the work you have been doing on Brazil I am very impressed with it. I hope that you have a good attempt at Capoeira.

Have a wonderful Friday and enjoy your weekend with plenty of fresh air.

Mr Galpin

Wednesday 8th July

Bonjour Year 5! What a horrible wet day it was yesterday! Hopefully we will see a bit of sunshine today! I've just realised that there were pictures of the Work angel that I should have uploaded for yesterday's art task. They are above this message now - sorry !

Today's tasks:
- Maths - week 11 Lesson 3 - Reflections. You will find the worksheets (including the answers) above this message, as well as the video link. You can either print off the worksheets and write on them or record you answers in your homework book or on paper.

English -Talk4writing -We will continue using text and work from the Talk4writing Batch 4 link above - Wonderful Wizards by Maria Richards. As I've already stated, please don't print out the worksheets as this will be a lot of ink. Instead write down your ideas from the worksheets into your homework book or onto spare paper. - Bug Club - I have moved everyone up to the next book band, so if you were on Book Band Brown A, you have moved to Brown B; if you were on Book Band Grey A, you have moved to Grey B; and if you were on Book Band Blue A, you have moved to Blue B. Please choose a book this week from your book band, read it and answer the questions. I have noticed that some of you have been using Big Club regularly, but others haven't used it at all!

Practise your x7, x9 and x11 times tables. I will set a times tables test on Friday. Again, if you haven't done the times tables test set last Friday, please do that today. There are still only 5 of you have done that x tables test so far - check you are doing the right one. You need to go to 2Do to access the correct test. I think some of you may not be going to the 2Do list to access the correct test.

- Science - As we are looking at Brazil this week, this is the perfect opportunity to find out about the Amazon rainforest. Follow this link to the WWF website that tells you all about the Amazon rainforest including the animals and people who live there, why it is important, why it is in danger and what is being done about it. https://www.worldwildlife.org/places/amazon

Then I would like you to create a poster all about what you have learnt. You may want to focus on specific parts, such as the animals or deforestation, or you may want to include small amounts of information on everything! Try to make your poster appealing as well as informative. Don’t forget to send me any pictures of what you create.

- Try to avoid the rain today and get some exercise and fresh air. Continue to be helpful around the house eg. make your bed, tidy your room, lay the table, clear the table after tea, wash or dry up, help in the garden  etc etc.!

Monday 6th July

A very good morning to you all year 5! I hope you had a lovely weekend and are feeling refreshed and ready for a new week of learning!!
I am going to place all the resources at the top of this column like I did last week. I will add to it as and when I need to, as the week goes on.

Some of you may know by now, but Miss Marshall will not be coming back to Thingwall in September. She is very sad to be leaving, but she was only here whilst Miss Arden and Miss Collins had their babies, and this means a new adventure for her. Next academic year, she will be teaching a year 4 class in a British school in Brazil! So, Mrs Evans has decided to make the next two weeks a Brazilian fortnight where we can learn all about Brazil! There will be lots of Brazilian themed activities to have a go at from learning Portuguese to practising capoeira (a Brazilian martial art). I am sure you'll enjoy learning all about Brazil!

Today's tasks:
- Maths - week 11 Lesson 1 - Regular and irregular polygons.

As I've suggested before, please don't print out the worksheets as this will be a lot of ink. Instead write down your ideas from the worksheets into your homework book or onto spare paper. The work will build up during the next few weeks so keep what you do each day.

Today's task: Continuing from page 11 - What makes good persuasive writing? Investigate some of the words and phrases that would help make your writing persuasive and would be useful when writing an advert. Then page 12 - The 'fill in the gaps' game.

Spellings - If you haven't already done so, ask an adult to test you on week 37 spellings. Begin to learn week 38 spellings - listed above.

IDL x2 lessons

- MFL- As Mrs Evans has designated this week and next week to Brazil, we’re going to have a go at learning some Portuguese. Watch this video to learn the different greetings in Portuguese https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc0GRj-ec9shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc0GRj-ec9s

You may already know how to say good morning, but I wonder what else you will learn! Have fun!

Get plenty of exercise and fresh air. I am sure you are already doing this but remember to be helpful around the house eg. make your bed, tidy your room, lay the table, clear the table after tea, wash or dry up, help in the garden  etc etc.!

Friday 17th July 2020

Welcome to a fabulous Friday Year 5. You made it to the end of term, well done. I hope you keep growing your sunflowers, make the sun shine. Wish me luck with mine!

You just have today left as Year 5’s and I wanted to say a HUGE thank you for everything that each of you has done this year. This year has been a challenging one and this is not the way that I thought it would be ending. However, with every challenge we learn so much and you should be very proud of yourselves for how you have completed work and dealt with the situation by building your resilience.

From the start of the year I have enjoyed getting to know you all, taking you swimming, learning about and making a solar system (with toilet roll), learning some Greek dancing and performing a brilliant Christmas concert. A highlight for me was our trip to Burwardsley; the archaeological dig, the archery and the star gazing during our evening play.

You have all been brilliant at helping and welcoming me and have taught me so much, hopefully I have taught you a lot as well. I know the school closures took away my last few months of teaching and learning in the classroom but I have enjoyed teaching and learning in a different way outside the classroom.

All that is left to say is good luck for next year, you will all be in Year 6 and you will be setting the example for the rest of the school by helping your FS2 buddies and leading the way. I hope you have a wonderful summer getting plenty of fresh air, exercise and rest. Just remember to keep smiling and think about a positive thing that you have done every day throughout the holidays.

Thank you again, you were a wonderful Year 5 class to teach!

Mr Galpin

Remember - it should be colourful and eye catching, and have parts like feathers or flags that move about as the performers dance.

Croeso Year 5! I hope you had a wonderful weekend and had a fantastic start to the week yesterday. Can you believe that it's the last week of the school term? The year has certainly not panned out how I thought it might but you should all be very proud of yourselves. Your growth mindset and positive attitude has shone through with the effort that you have all put into the work since I last saw you in March!

I hope you have been enjoying the work that Mrs Holroyd has been setting you about Brazil, I'm sure there will be some brilliant ideas for designing your own CARNAVAL costume.

I have added some pictures of my sunflowers underneath this message. Over the weekend I had to split my sunflowers into different pots as they were growing too big to be together. How are your sunflowers getting on? I hope you have been looking after them.

Have a lovely Tuesday, stay happy, keep smiling and get some fresh air.
